Applications like Flash, Adobe Reader, Quicktime and Java are installed on almost every Windows PC, but are often out of date, leaving your PC open to vulnerabilities. Each of these applications has its own update mechanism, but Secunia has an easy, free solution to ensure that everything on your PC is up to date.

Before you start, you'll need a copy of Java, which can be downloaded from the Java web site. Starting at Secunia.com, click the Scan Online link, as shown here.

Once you have Java installed, you'll see a blue start button, like this:

Click Start Now, and the Software Inspector will take you to a second page, where you can choose to do a thorough inspection, which we recommend. Click Start and you're off.

After a few minutes of scanning, software inspector will show you a report that indicates whether you have any software that needs updating. You can see below that I have some work to do!

Clicking on the individual items gives you information on the version of each you have and where to go to update it.

You can run the software inspector as many times as you need to until your PC gets a clean bill of health.
