Firefox logoThe default Firefox interface uses too much screen real estate, so I like to create more browsing space by changing its toolbars.  In this article I'll show how to customize the Firefox browser interface so it fits on a single toolbar, without giving up any functionality.

In Firefox, the F11 key toggles a full screen view, but it hides the status bar and is not ideal for switching between the browser and other applications.  The best way to maximize browsing space is to reduce the amount of space Firefox uses for its various interface widgets.

The first thing we'll need is an add-on called Tiny Menu.  To install Tiny Menu, open Firefox and then click Tools -> Add-ons.  In the Add-ons dialog, click the Get Extensions link.

Search for tiny menu and then click the Add to Firefox button.

Approve the install and then restart Firefox to finish.

When Firefox restarts, the standard menu will be replaced by a single Menu button that drops down to reveal the full Firefox menu.

The next step is to move the other browser controls up to the menu toolbar.  To do this, right-click an empty space in the menu and click Customize...

Starting with the Back button, click each button and drag it into the menu toolbar.

Repeat the above step with the address bar, search box and Bookmarks Toolbar items.  Once all the browser controls are on the top line, hide the Navigation and Bookmarks toolbars, which are now empty.  To hide the toolbars, right click the empty space and then click the checkbox next to each toolbar name.

Next, create a folder for the Bookmarks Toolbar items by right-clicking the bookmarks toolbar area on the far right and clicking New Folder...  I called my new folder Links.

It's a little tricky, but the final step is to drag the Bookmarks Toolbar items into the new Links folder, which should look like the following.

We started with a three line interface that takes up too much space and ended up with a single toolbar that allows 35 extra pixels for browsing big, complex pages.
